Work description

The GB rail industry is being called upon the replacement of all diesel-only trains by 2040 aiming to reduce carbon emissions. Currently, Hydrogen powered trains offer an attractive, lower carbon/zero carbon, alternative to the existing diesel trains. Any new hydrogen rolling stock seeking to be introduced will face the same challenge of proving that they are safe to enter service, and the process for demonstrating this capability has yet to be defined. RSSB, as an independent body, has been approached to help develop a solution agnostic 'route map to enter service'. The high-level objectives of this work are to: • Inform specific design solutions of hydrogen powered trains by a sound understanding of operational considerations and safety risk • Determining what standardisation is needed • Clarify route to market from a safety and compatibility perspective with the GB network.

Additional information: The contracting authority considers that this contract may be suitable for economic operators that are small or medium enterprises (SMEs). However, any selection of tenderers will be based solely on the criteria set out for the procurement.
